Hornwort Oxygenating Pond Plant – Ceratophyllum demersum
Bring your pond to life with strong, healthy Hornwort, one of the most useful and popular oxygenating plants for wildlife ponds, fish ponds and natural garden ponds.
Our Hornwort is grown in our own natural outdoor ponds, where it develops in genuine pond conditions rather than being kept artificially in tanks. This means you receive a fresh, naturally grown plant that is already accustomed to life outdoors.
Hornwort is an excellent choice for helping create a healthier, more balanced pond. Its dense, feathery growth provides valuable underwater cover for small fish, tadpoles and other pond wildlife, while also helping create a more natural pond environment.
One of the biggest advantages of Hornwort is that it is very easy to add to your pond. There is no need for baskets or soil. Simply place it into the pond and allow it to float or settle naturally.
Why choose our Hornwort?
- Fresh, healthy pond-grown plants
- Grown outdoors in our own natural ponds
- Excellent oxygenating pond plant
- Provides shelter for fish, tadpoles and pond wildlife
- Ideal for wildlife ponds and fish ponds
- No basket or soil required
- Easy to add directly to an established pond
- Naturally grown in UK pond conditions
How Your Hornwort Will Be Sent
To help protect the delicate stems and foliage during transport, we send the Hornwort loose, with the lead weights supplied separately.
This prevents the weights from crushing, cutting or damaging the plant while it is in transit. Once your order arrives, you can simply attach the supplied weights if you wish to sink or position the Hornwort in a particular area of your pond.
Alternatively, Hornwort can be allowed to float freely and settle naturally.
Important – Naturally Pond Grown
Our Hornwort is taken directly from our own natural ponds.
Because it is grown naturally rather than in a sterile indoor system, it may contain small amounts of duckweed, pond snails, snail eggs or other harmless natural pond life.
Many customers welcome this in a wildlife pond, but if you do not want any additional pond life introduced, we recommend thoroughly rinsing and inspecting the Hornwort before placing it into your pond.
This is part of buying a genuinely natural pond-grown plant.
Seasonal Colour Variation
Please note that Hornwort naturally changes appearance throughout the year.
In early spring and again later in the season, the plant may appear darker green, olive green or slightly browner than shown in our main photograph. This is completely normal and does not mean the plant is unhealthy.
As light levels and temperatures increase, Hornwort will normally produce fresher, brighter green growth.
Because our plants are grown naturally outdoors, their colour, density and appearance can vary depending on the time of year.
How to Add Hornwort to Your Pond
There is no need to plant Hornwort into soil or gravel.
You can either:
- Attach the supplied weights and place it below the water surface
- Allow it to float freely
- Position it amongst other pond plants and allow it to settle naturally
Hornwort can also be introduced during the cooler parts of the season, making it a useful plant to establish ready for future growth.
Fresh stock supplied while available.
If you are looking for a simple, natural and effective oxygenating plant for your pond, Hornwort is an excellent addition.
